You must run twice as fast!

alice.pngLewis Carroll was a brilliant writer, no doubt. Alice through the Looking Glass is a very candid yet insightful novel, inspiring kids just like business men!

I came across the quote below reading through an old book of mine, and I realized that it represents quite an analogy to innovations and the business world.

“A slow sort of country” said the Red Queen. “Now here, you see, it takes all the running you can do to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!”

A while back I read a book called “Mind Over Matter” by K.C. Cole, a collection of her columns for the LA Times science column.

Two things from that work resonated with your quote and your theme:

“You can’t find anything unexpected if you always know where you’re going.”

    and

“The only way to stay in place in the universe is to keep moving. You are always in movement relative to something, whether you can sense it or not. Equilibrium is always dynamic.”

Valeria, very nice quotes! I will see if I can lay my hands on Kole’s book.

The resources page looks very useful, at least to those who want to shorten the learning curve on innovation theory. I would like to suggest one of my favorite books, “Serious Play” by Michael Schrage. It’s a very interesting point of view about the possibilities that a new technology -simulations in this case- give to existing customers.

Tomas, I will definitely add that book, I heard about it, but I still need to read it. Thanks for suggesting it.
