Information technology is changing many things, and perhaps above all of them the workplace. Consider that one can not help but wonder what IT related careers are the fastest growing ones? Recently I came across an article on ComputerMajors.com that answered exactly this question. The data was partially retrieved from research carried out by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Here they are:

Environmental Simulations Developer

Video Game Developer

Bioinformatics Simulations Modeling

3D Animation Technician

Internet Entrepreneur

Medical Modeling Systems Developer and Technician

Digital Film Production Assistant and Technician

Website Network Manager / Administrator

Training Software Developer

Visual and Audio Content Producers

You can read the full article with a description for each career here.

Sometime ago we have already stated that MBAs are overrated. Guess what, today it is time to criticize college education!

Recently I came across another curious article listing 15 successful entrepreneurs who didn’t need college education. You can see a description for each of these entrepreneurs on the original article, and below you will find their names (most of them need no introduction):

Mary Kay Ash

Richard Branson

Coco Chanel

Simon Cowell

Michael Dell

Barry Diller

Walt Disney

Debbi Fields

Henry Ford

Bill Gates

Milton Hershey

Steve Jobs

Rachael Ray

Ty Warner

Frank Lloyd Wright

Do you think that college education is not essential? Personally I think that this would be an extreme view. I do agree, however, with the fact that the traditional education system is failing to adapt to our information based society. Time will tell.

Forbes recently published an interesting article titled “The Worst Jobs For The 21st Century.” What do you think they are? If you guessed federal agents, travel agents, journalists and radio announcers, you nailed it.

Here is a quotation from the article:

“What to avoid? The usual suspects. According to the projections by the U.S. government, manufacturing jobs are expected to decline by more than 5% by 2014 as production moves overseas. Same goes for textile workers, such as sewing machine operators, who will see a 36% drop in employment. Technology will kill off more office positions, such as file clerks. They’ll see a 36% drop in their ranks by 2014. Digital cameras will zap the manual photo processing industry by about 30%. And that guy who comes around to read your electric meter? Expect to see a lot less of him, too.”

I think the Internet will be even more influential upon the world economy than what the article is predicting. If your skills, competencies and attitudes make you competitive in a global, flat environment, you win. If they don’t, you lose.
