[...] Noted psychology professor, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, states that culture tends to set up formal and informal domain experts. A group of select nuclear scientists with a Ph.D.s might act as the gatekeeper of the domain called “nuclear science”. Therefore, your creative idea about nuclear physics would have to pass by, and be endorsed by, them before it became THE answer in the rarified world of nuclear science culture. Hey, what about a “second right answer”? [...]

Nelson,

There's a nice interview with Frank Zappa where Zappa asserts that "The most important thing in art is the frame." Without that frame, you don't have that defined context, and you don't have the demarcation of where the art starts and stops and the real world begins.

I think there's something to that . . .

Hi Daniel,

You mentioned that:

>

On the connection between creativity and humour, I'd like to point you towards two books if you have not already read them:

1. "The Act of Creation" by Arthur Koestler (1964)

2. "Creativity: The Magic Synthesis" by Sivano Arieti (1976)

Both works make an argument at length that the psychological processes underlying humour and creativity are very similar, involving a juxtaposition of different contexts or 'frames'. So a creative insight can come from the right juxtaposition of two different frames of meaning in a manner similar to what makes a joke funny.

Regards from Australia

Hi Daniel,
Great interview. I found interesting the bit about creativity being defined within a certain context. I work with brand planning, and I always say that there's a fine line between being a genius and being a fool. And that's all about context.
Researchers who get the igNobel award? Lack of context (about the relevance of their work, for instance).
People who see a piece of modern art, a Pollock for example, and say "even I could paint like that", all lack context.
Innovation that is rejected within the corporation? Lack of context.
Context is probably one of the most underrated aspects of creativity.
Cheers,
Nelson
ps: I got here via Roger himself, who graciously pointed me to your blog (I'm Brazilian as well)

As a fan of Roger from HK, I already ordered the Ball of Whack right after I saw it from the Web half an hour ago. No second thought. Never doubt about Roger's work. It must be great!!

Glad to see Roger moving from Creative Books to Creative Products. I got really inspired by him creatively--both personal and work life.

Of course, I am longing to read more of his new books. I have a full collection of all Roger's books and Whack Cards at home. Read them again every one year or so.

I do think he is better than many authors in terms of not just cashing in and rushing out new books. Every new book he launched is of great quality.

Thanks, Roger. You are Mr. Creative Nice Guy!
