I think that your assumption that everyone else feels the same way in a suit that you did, and wears them for the same reasons you did, is fallacious. People wear suits as a sign of respect. I wear one every day as a sign of respect to my clients. Would you take financial or legal advice from a guy sitting on a beach wearing sandals and a linen shirt? Probably not. I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy the corporate environment, and I congratulate you on starting your own business. However, its rather myopic to suggest that your choices are inherently superior.

If clothes did not matter, explain all the image consultants out there. But if you treat it as a necessary evil, and acccept the circumstances, they may make a difference.

As long as people are obsessed with how we look, good clothes have an initial advantage. The rest as they say is up to you. You know how smart you are. But do the others? How do you look smart/confident etc?

Before you decide to go this way or that, talk to successful cons or corporates spending money on lifestyle training. There seems to be a huge market out there, based on people's sense of inadequacy....

You should get your self-confidence from other things than a suit: true.

People who want to change the world don't wear suit: BS

There are a lot of suckers wearing suits, but there are just as many suckers wearing no suits. Look through the suit, what matters what you do, not how you look.

Good article. I always thought I would end up in a job that required a suit. I actually looked forward to the prospect of it.

I'm typing this in my pajamas now at 12 Noon local time, it's the best feeling in the world. :)
